Sunday Lunch in Italy, Piemontese Recipes from my Mother in Law

PRANZO DI DOMENICA – Sunday lunch in Italy, in my mother in law’s Piemontese kitchen is NOT to be missed!

It is a sacred ritual here in Italy, and the one weekly routine that has been most affected by these constant lockdowns this past year.

Being unable to share a simple meal with family and friends has been tough on us all. But in Italy and for Italians it has been extremely difficult. There is a culture in and of itself surrounding the dinner table in Italy; everything happens around the table while eating and drinking!

Luckily, even with all these lockdowns, we were able to move from our town to see my husband’s family and celebrate all things we weren’t able to celebrate recently together.

We still kept our distance and followed the necessary precautions, but we let ourselves enjoy every sip and every bite of our once regular Sunday meal.

My mother in law made some of my favourite Piemontese dishes which I happy to share with you!

Here is a TYPICAL PIEMONTESE ITALIAN SUNDAY LUNCH MENU :

COLD APPETIZERS : LOCAL PIEMONTESE SALAMI & CHEESE, ANCHOVIES, OLIVE, BREAD STICKS

HOT APPETIZERS: PEPPERS IN BAGNA CAUDA (click here for the recipe) , CAPONET

FIRST COURSE : LASAGNA

SECOND COURSE: BRASATO

DESSERT: PANETTONE, LOCAL CHOCOLATES

LASAGNA

ACHOVIES SOTTO OLIO
PEPPERONI IN BAGNA CAUDA

Piemontese cabbage wraps filled with meat, also known in Italian as involtini di cavolo

BRASSATO

Beef cooked in Barolo wine (or rich Italian red wine) with herb gravy

These are by far my favourite Piemontese dishes and some of the most typical Piemontese home cooked dishes you can find!

I know I have already mentioned it here on the blog, but my mother in law is a remarkable Italian home chef! Thanks to her I have learned so much and more in my Italian cooking!
